In the month of April 2012, there was an article in the Deccan Chronicle about e-waste that was conducted in Chennai by GEMS (Global E-waste Management Systems). Earlier to that there were discussions in our office that we should do some thing about disposal of e waste. This article was an opportunity to start in a small way. This was to be a joint effort of GEMS, Kotagiri Town Panchayat, Last Forest Enterprises, Keystone & Nilgiri Natural History Society. On the 20th of May 2012, celebrated as World Recycling Day, we decided to start our campaign at Kotagiri, in front of our Green Shop. We were able to collect 95 kgs of e-waste have made The Green Shop, a collection point. We are still receiving small quantities at our Green Shop. GEMS provided receipts to each individual who brought material and a log book is maintained as a registry. Since there was fairly a good response in Kotagiri, we decided to have a campaign in Coonoor also.
In Coonoor, we had the campaign on 5th June, being the World Environment Day, where Keystone, GEMS, Coonoor Municipality, Last Forest Enterprises, Nilgiri Natural History Society and Nilgiri Information Technology Association, jointy initiated this campaign. Through this campaign, we were able to collect around 500 kgs of e-waste. In Coonoor too, the Greeen Shop, is a collection point where people are enquiring and depositing their e-waste. The campaign will move to Ooty, which is to happen in the month of August 2012.
