The Kombai Indigenous Women’s Progressive Group, a group of 13 Kurumba & Irula tribal women , have been producing various value added products using honey, beeswax and other NTFP. These products including bees wax soap, lip-balms, jams, pickles, Amla candy and different types of honey are supplied to the Green shops and also sold through the ‘Honey Hut’ stationed at Burliyar, on the highway between Mettuplayam and Coonoor towns.

All the above activities were carried out in a tribal woman’s house at Kurumbadi since 2005. The group was facing a number of issues like space constraint, long travel distance for many members, Elephant movement, local village trouble etc. Hence the group has taken the initiative and convinced the Pudukaadu village leader, Panchyat authorities and officials of the Forest Department to provide space to build a production centre in Pudukaadu village, which is centrally located for many settlements. With grant support from Cordaid, and facilitation from Keystone the new production center building was inaugurated on 31st March 2010. This center will not only support value addition activities on NTFP & farm produce but also be a resource centre for indigenous communities.
