Climate education in mountain ecosystems is crucial due to the unique vulnerability of these regions to the impacts of climate change. Keystone Foundation is working in Shimla in partnership with Eichers Group Foundation in four schools, imparting climate education. It is seen as an opportunity to build a narrative on climate education from a mountain ecosystem perspective. Bhavya, Vidya, and climate educators Bharati, Shailaja, and Greeta visited Shimla from July 14th to 18th to review the work and cross learn.
எங்களின் இனிமையான ஹிமாச்சல் பயணம், ஜூலை 14, 2025 அன்று, முதன்முறையாக விமானத்தில் பறக்கும் அனுபவத்தை நினைத்து இரவு உறங்காமல் காத்திருந்தோம் இரண்டு மணிக்கு அலாரம் அடித்தது மடமடவென்று வேகமாக தயாராகி கோயம்புத்தூர் செல்வதற்காக வாகனத்தை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருந்தோம். 4:15 மணிக்கு வாகனம் வந்தது மிகவும் ஆர்வத்தோடும், எதிர்பார்ப்போடும் முதன்முறையாக ஏர்போர்ட்டுக்கு வந்தடைந்தோம். பின் சீட்டில் அமர்ந்த போது எப்பொழுது விமானத்தை பார்ப்போம் என்றிருந்தது. முதன் முதலில் விமானத்தில் கால் வைத்தது; சொல்ல முடியாத மகிழ்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியது. உள்ளே அமர்ந்து செல்ஃபி எடுத்துக்கொண்டோம் எங்கள் குடும்பத்தாருக்கும் போன் செய்து எங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியை தெரிவித்தோம். அவர்களுக்கும் மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சி காரணம் முதன்முறையாக எங்கள் குடும்பங்களில் விமானத்தில் பயணம் செய்பவரும் சிம்லா செல்பவர்கள் நாங்கள் மட்டுமே.
விமானம் ரன்வே சென்றபோதும் மேல் எழும்பிய போதும் இனம் புரியாத மகிழ்ச்சியும் படபடப்பும் எங்களுக்குள் இருந்தது விமானம் சென்னையில் இறங்கிய போது போட்டோ எடுத்து மகிழ்ந்தோம் மீண்டும் சண்டிகர் செல்லும் விமானத்தில் ஏறிய போது நாங்கள் மூவரும் உறங்காமல் எங்கள் முதல் விமான பயண அனுபவத்தை பகிர்ந்து கொண்டோம். சண்டிகரிலிருந்து காரில் பாகு (Fagu) செல்லும் வழியில் சாலையின் இரு புறங்களிலும் சிறிது தூரம் அரளி மரங்கள் இருந்தன அவற்றில் வெள்ளை சிவப்பு வண்ணங்களில் பூக்கள், பார்ப்பதற்கு மிகவும் அழகாக இருந்தது.
ஏர்போர்ட் அருகிலேயே வயல்வெளிகளில் நாற்றுகள் காற்றினால் தலையசைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தன மேலும் முகலாய கட்டிடக்கலையை நினைவூட்டும் வகையில் செந்நிற கட்டிடம் பார்க்க அழகாக இருந்தது சண்டிகரிலிருந்து சிம்லாவிற்கு செல்லும் போது முடிவற்ற சாலை நீண்டு போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தது, மழையும் பெய்து கொண்டிருந்தது; அந்த செந்நீர் சிறு சிறு ஓடைகள் போல் மேலிருந்து கீழ்நோக்கி ஓடியது பார்க்க மிகவும் ரம்மியமாக இருந்தது. ரிசார்ட் மற்றும் வீடுகள் உயரமான இடங்களில் அமைந்திருந்தன நீண்ட நேர பயணத்திற்கு பிறகு எங்கள் ரிசார்ட் வந்தடைந்தோம்.
மாலை 7:30 மணி வரையும் இருட்டவில்லை சற்று வெளிச்சமாகவே இருந்தது இரவு உணவுக்கு பின் அசதியில் உறங்கி விட்டோம். 15 – ஆம் தேதி மறுநாள் காலை ஐந்து மணி அளவில் கண்விழித்துப் பார்த்தபோது மிகவும் வெளிச்சமாகவும் ரம்யமான மலைத்தொடர்களையும், மேகக் கூட்டங்களையும் பார்த்தோம். இன்று தியோக் சென்றோம் இது பள்ளத்தாக்கில் மிக அழகிய இடம் வரும் வழி மிகக்குறுகிய வளைவான ஆபத்தான பாதையாக உள்ளது, ஆப்பிள் மரங்களும் பழங்களும் அதிக அளவில் காணப்பட்டன இங்கு இருக்கும் அதிகமான மரங்களும் செடிகளும் நீலகிரியை ஒத்திருக்கின்றனர் தற்போதைய காலநிலையையும் நீலகிரி ஒத்திருக்கிறது.
சுற்றிலும் மலைகளும் காடுகளும் அதற்கு மேல் உலாவரும் மேகக் கூட்டங்களும் குன்றுகளில் வீடுகள் ஆங்காங்கே இருக்கின்றன இங்குள்ள ஹாப் நமது கீ ஸ்டோர் ஆபிஸை ஒத்திருக்கிறது. இங்கயும் கற்களை பயன்படுத்தி கட்டிடம் எழுப்பியுள்ளனர், அதிகமான சிமெண்ட் பயன்படுத்தவில்லை தரை மற்றும் மரப்பலகைகள் கொண்டும் தகரம் உபயோகித்தும் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இங்குள்ள பழங்குடியினரின் கைத்தொழில் வண்ணத்தில் பொருட்கள் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன ஸ்வெட்டர் குள்ளா போன்றவைகளும் அவர்களின் பாரம்பரியத்தை எடுத்துக்காட்டி உள்ளது. சுவர்களில் மாட்டியுள்ள சித்திரங்களில் இப்பகுதி மக்களின் கலை நயமும் தொழிலும் எடுத்துக்காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. உணவிற்குப்பின் தமாத்ரி பள்ளிக்கு சென்றோம் இனிமையாக வரவேற்று உபசரித்தனர் மாணவர்கள் கிச்சன் கார்டன் மூலம் அந்தந்த பையில் தங்கள் பெயர்களை எழுதி பராமரித்துள்ளனர்.
16-ஆம் தேதி மறுநாள் மூன்று பள்ளிகளுக்கு சென்றோம் சரோக், சியோக் மற்றும் குப்பிரி பள்ளிக்கு செல்ல மிகவும் ஆர்வமாக இருந்தது வழியில் செல்லும் இடத்தில் டீ குடிப்பதற்காக நிறுத்திய போது காட்சிகள் மிக அழகாக இருந்தது, பள்ளங்கள் அதிகமான அடர்த்தியான காடுகளும் காணப்பட்டன வழியில் யாக் பார்த்தோம் மிக அழகாக இருந்தது. பாதைகள் வளைவான வழிநெடுகிலும் தோட்டங்களில் இலை தெரியாத அளவில் மரங்களில் ஆப்பிள் காய்த்து தொங்கின இவைகளைக் கடந்து பள்ளிக்குச் சென்றோம் ஒவ்வொரு பள்ளியிலும் எதிர்ப்பாராத அளவு வரவேற்பும் உபசரிப்பும் கிடைத்தது ஆசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களும் அன்புடன் பழகினர் ஆனால் இருவருக்கும் இடையில் மொழி ஒரு தடையாக இருந்தாலும், முகபாவனை வைத்து புரிந்து கொண்டோம்.
17-ஆம் தேதி காலை உணவுக்கு பின் ஹப்பிற்கு வந்தோம், தூரலாகவே இருந்தது. ஹப்பில் வைத்து ஆஷிஷ், ஸ்ரே இருவரும் பயோ என்சைம் கரிம பொருள் செயல்முறையை எங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டனர, நாங்களும் ஒரு கதையை எவ்வாறு எழுதுவது என்ற வழிமுறைகளையும் அவர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டோம்.
இங்குள்ள அனைத்தும் இயற்கையோடு இணைந்து காணப்படுகிறது, இங்கு உள்ள எஜுகேட்டஸ் ஆன ஸ்ரீ , ஆசிஸ் இருவரையும் சந்தித்தது மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி. மீண்டும் 18ஆம் தேதி காலை 9 மணியளவில் கிளம்பி ராஷ்டிரபதி பவன் மாளிகைக்கு சென்றோம் ராஷ்டிரபதி பவன் செல்லும் வழியில் பல வகையான காளான்களையும் நீண்ட நத்தையையும் பார்த்தோம்ஸ்ரீ அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு வகையான காளான்களையும் பெயர்களுடன் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார் அவருடைய ஆர்வம் எங்களையும் பற்றி கொண்டது நாங்களும் எங்களை அறியாமல் காளான்களை தேட ஆரம்பித்தோம்.
175 வருட பழமையான கட்டிடம் பார்க்கவே மிகவும் பிரமாண்டமாக இருந்தது உள்ளே சுற்றி பார்த்த பின் நேச்சர் வாக் சென்றோம் பல வகையான காளான்களையும் பறவைகளின் ஒலி மற்றும்நம் நிலப்பரப்பிற்கு ஏத்த செடி கொடிகளையும் கண்டோம் வழியில் முள்பழம் உண்டோம் அது ஸ்ட்ராபெரி போல் இருந்தது. மதிய உணவிற்கு பின் சிம்லா சென்றோம். மால் ரோடு சென்று அதன் வழியே மார்க்கெட் சென்றோம் திருவிழா கூட்டம் போல் மக்கள் வெள்ளம். பழங்கால கட்டிடங்கள் பலவற்றையும் கண்டோம் மீண்டும் அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பி ஃபாகு வந்தடைத்தோம்.
இரவில் மறுநாள் கிளம்புவதை எண்ணி வருத்தமாக இருந்தது மறுநாள் காலை 6:00 மணிக்கு அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பி மனம் இல்லாமல் சண்டிகர் ஏர்போர்ட் வந்து சேர்ந்தோம். விமானம் ஏறி டெல்லி வந்தடைந்தோம் மீண்டும் 6:00 மணிக்கு விமானம் என்பதால் டெல்லி ஏர்போர்ட் சுற்றிப் பார்த்தோம் போட்டோ எடுத்து வீடியோ கால் மூலம் குடும்பத்தாருக்கு விமானங்களை காண்பித்தோம்ஒவ்வொரு இடத்திலும் பல்வேறு விஷயத்தை காண்பித்து எங்களை அதனை அனுபவிக்க செய்து மகிழ்ந்தார் பவ்யா (Programme coordinator) இப்பயணம் மிகவும் இனிமையாகவும் எங்களுக்கு ஒரு வாய்ப்பாகவும் அமைத்துக் கொடுத்ததற்கு மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி.
Climate Educators visit and experience in Himachal Pradesh

Our pleasant trip to Himachal, July 14th, 2025. Today was our first time flying in a plane, and we waited without sleeping all night. The alarm rang at 2 am, we quickly got ready and waited for the vehicle to go to Coimbatore. The vehicle arrived at 4:15 pm, and we reached the airport for the first time with great excitement.
We wondered when we would see the plane, as it was our first time setting foot on a plane; it brought indescribable joy. We sat inside and took pictures, and called our family to express our happiness. They were also very happy because, for the first time in our families, we were the ones traveling in a plane to Shimla.
When the plane took off, we had incomprehensible joy and excitement in us. After the plane landed in Chennai, we boarded the next plane to Chandigarh again. The three of us did not sleep and talked about our first flight experience with one another. On the way from Chandigarh to Fagu by car, there were trees on both sides of the road for a short distance, with white and red flowers on them, which were very beautiful to look at.
The seedlings in the fields near the airport were nodding in the wind, and the red building reminiscent of Mughal architecture was beautiful to see. The endless road from Chandigarh to Shimla was stretching, and it was raining; the red water flowing from top to bottom in small streams was very beautiful to see. The resort and the houses were located on high places. After a long journey, we reached our location.
We had light until 7:30 p.m. After dinner, we slept soundly. The next day, when we woke at 5 a.m., we were treated to stunning mountain ranges and cloud clusters. We made our first visit to the Himalayan hub in Theog. This valley is breathtakingly gorgeous, and the route to get there is a narrow and treacherous road with steep twists. Apple trees and fruits were abundant; the majority of the trees and plants here are similar to those found in the Nilgiris. The current climate is similar to the Nilgiris, too.
The surrounding mountains and forests, the clouds floating above them, and the residences on the slopes are distributed throughout the landscape. The center here looks like our Keystone office. The building was also built of stones, with little cement used. Handmade cultural art around the building highlighted their heritage. The paintings on the walls demonstrate the artistic abilities and workmanship of the inhabitants in this area. After lunch, we went to the Damatri school, where we were warmly welcomed. The students wrote their names on their different grow bags in the kitchen garden.
The following day, we visited three schools: Sarog, Cheog, and Kufri, which were quite interesting. On the way, we stopped at Kufri for tea. Everything on the way was stunning. We walked to school through twisting lanes and orchards with apple trees so thick that we couldn’t see the leaves. We were greeted and treated with unexpected warmth at each school. The teachers and students engaged pleasantly, and despite the fact that language was a barrier, we were able to communicate through our expressions.
The next day, after breakfast, we reached the hub, which was quite far. At the hub, Ashish and Shrey shared the bio-enzyme organic matter process with us, and we also shared with them the steps on how to write a story. The educators, Shrey and Ashish, were nice. On the 18th, we left at 9 a.m. for the Rashtrapati Bhavan (summer residence of the President of India) . We observed a variety of mushrooms and a lengthy snail on our walk. Shrey explained the names of each variety of mushroom. His excitement piqued our interest, and we started searching for mushrooms without realizing it.
The 175-year-old edifice was impressive to see. After looking around inside, we went for a nature walk. We noticed a variety of mushrooms, heard birds, and observed plants similar to our landscape. On the way, we ate thorn fruit, which tasted like strawberries. After lunch, we traveled to Shimla. We went down Mall Road to the market, which was crowded like a festival. We visited some antique structures there.
We were saddened to leave the next day. We departed at 6:00 a.m. the next morning and arrived at Chandigarh Airport without any problems. We boarded the plane and traveled to Delhi. We walked around Delhi Airport, took photos, and showed our family the planes via video calls because the flight was at 6:00 again. Bhavya (the programme coordinator) showed us different things at each location and made us happy. We are happy for the opportunity and visit.
