According to the World Health Organisation, a third of the world’s undernourished people live in India, many of which are young children. September 1 to 7 is celebrated as National Nutrition Week every year, to raise awareness for the vitality of nutrition.

Keystone’s Community Well-being team organised an engaging interaction with the primary level students of Government Tribal Residential School, Semmanarai, during this time. This year’s theme was ‘World of Flavours’ which encourages a healthy lifestyle and diet while highlighting and enjoying the diversity of flavours offered in native foods.

Community Health Workers (CHW) from Kotagiri and Nilambur, along with the Radio Kotagiri team led a workshop on food, nutrients, and maintaining a balanced diet. This was helpful in building awareness of the role of nutrition among students at a crucial age. The mode of interaction was designed to be creative to ensure active, keen participation and knowledge retention – students were encouraged to learn through drawing, painting, riddles, and music. Aside from the workshop, a traditional meal plate was prepared by CHW and distributed among the students. These meals were highly nutritious, offering green gram, bamboo shoot, and leafy greens (locally known as Churuli and Njenduchoppu).
